Karastoyanova-Hermentin für

Rychenberg Competition nominiert

In June 2018 the Musikkollegium Winterthur launched an international composition contest in collaboration with the Fotomuseum Winterthur. A total of 191 composers from over 30 countries applied for the competition, from which 85 submitted their compositions. The jury, chaired by the Swiss composer Alfred Zimmerlin, nominated 10 works to be recorded on video by the Musikkollegium Winterthur in August 2019 and published on this website for an online audience voting. The Rychenberg Competition will award prizes worth a total of CHF 100,000.

Im Juni 2018 lancierte das Musikkollegium Winterthur in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Fotomuseum Winterthur einen internationalen Kompositionswettbewerb. Insgesamt 191 Komponistinnen und Komponisten aus über 30 Länder haben sich für den Wettbewerb angemeldet und 85 davon Kompositionen eingereicht. Die Wettbewerbs-Jury unter dem Vorsitz des Schweizer Komponisten Alfred Zimmerlin hat zehn Kompositionen nominiert, die vom Musikkollegium Winterthur im August 2019 eingespielt wurden deren Aufnahmen für ein Publikumsvoting auf der Website des Wettbewerbs veröffentlicht wurden. Die Rychenberg Competition vergibt Preisgelder von insgesamt über CHF 100‘000.00

Bird as Prophet - David Bowlin

Violinist David Bowlin has assembled a collection of new works for solo violin and with electronics that carry the virtuoso tradition forward, exploiting the instrument’s rich history while contextualizing it within a broad palette of contemporary aesthetics, some grounded in compositional craft and some responsive to other music cultures.


Bowlin has had a long standing collaborative relationship with Russian/Bulgarian composer Alexandra Karastoyanova-Hermentin, facilitated by his longtime tenure in the International Contemporary Ensemble. On Kastena, he is joined by ICE cellist Katinka Kleijn. Opening with a plaintive cadenza for the violin over a sustained cello drone, Kastena explodes into a vigorous dialogue between the two instruments. The piece returns to the opening drone texture and ends with a     

                                                                                                                                              haunting sotto voce soliloquy in the violin. Mari Mamo for violin, flute, and                                                                                                                                                                      percussion (Bowlin is joined by flutist Conor Nelson and percussionist Ayano                                                                                                                                                                Kataoka) is inspired by Bulgarian folk music. A main melody is passed between the                                                                                                                                                      three instruments, with short punctuations that propel the music forward. The                                                                                                                                                                composer joins the performance at the end of the work, with an affecting                                                                                                                                                                      improvised   vocal performance in the Bulgarian tradition.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                (D. Alexandra Karastoyanova-Hermentin receives for her work "ELIMO"  the Austrian State Prize "Outstanding Artist Award - Musik 2013" of the Austrian Federal Chancellery, as a reward of her excellent compositions work, given to one musician nationwide and awarded through the Federal Minister Dr. Claudia Schmid.
